In 2010 The Faversham Society Archaeological Research Group (FSARG) hosted its first conference 'Davington Mysteries'. This was an all-day event where guest speakers were invited to talk about community archaeology. Tickets for the event were sold out weeks in advance, with the final audience including both local people and archaeologists and historians from across the South East. The key speaker was not able to attend on the day, but instead, we were treated to an excellent speech by archaeologist, historian, lecturer and writer Neil Faulkner. Neil has appeared regularly in Channel 4's Time Team program.
Besides the speeches, FSARG discussed its findings from the archaeology work carried out in Davington and at Davington Priory. Attendees were then treated to a rare guided tour of Davington Priory and the surrounding area, where people were allowed to look around the grounds of the priory by very kind permission from Bob Geldof KBE.
People were escorted around the areas that FSARG had been investigating during their season. The tour ended in Davington Church with a speech given by Laurence Young, followed by a comprehensive question and answer session. All the proceeds from the conference went to Davington Church. Excellent feedback was obtained from the people attending which is testament to the extremely hard work put in by the organisers.
